We all love how babies smell especially after a nice bath and lots of talcum baby powder!
Here's the bad news: Talcum powder is very closely related to asbestos and has been linked to various cancers in humans. Its use is strongly discouraged in infants to avoid health concerns later on in life.
So however much you love the smell of baby powder on your baby, think of your baby's health and use cornflour instead! It's a natural, healthy alternative to absorbing moisture and keeping baby comf... Continue reading ...
The Death Trail of the Palm Oil Industry- Our Action is Needed NOW!
This catastrophy has been allowed to go on for far too long. Some countries such as Borneo and Malaysia have been sacrificing nature for money. Orang Utans for example are being killed off as their habitat is cleared to make way for palm tree plantations. Endangered animals other than the Orang Utans are also being killed off just for the sake palm oil.
  Pictures Speak a Thousand Words
The time for action is NOW!! Never underestimate the power of public pressure. ... Continue reading ...
Refreshing Your Chopping Boards!
Our chopping boards can be home to many harmful bugs such as E.coli, Salmonella and staphylococcus . A simple and effective way to ward off any bouts of rushed and frantic trips to the loo, all you need is to give your chopping boards a good clean with undiluted white vinegar after each use.
Never use water or dishwashing liquid as these weaken the wood fibres allowing for trapped smells and make a great home for nasty little so and sos!
If you wish to deodorise your boards, sprinkle some b... Continue reading ...
Good Ol' Potatoes!
The humble potato has been staple food for many cultures and the basis of some very strong alcoholic spirits as well. But there is more to the potato than meets the eye. Here are a couple of ways we can use the 'Mighty' potato:
The fun stuff first! Kids listen up (big kids too). You can make funky stamps using potatoes instead of buying expensive stamps from shops that can sometimes set you back about $20 or so a piece. Simply get a big kid to cut a potato in half and carve one half with any... Continue reading ...
Washing the Dishwasher
Using a dishwasher has been shown to save litres of water as opposed to washing by hand. It is a wonderful invention but it does get a bit grimy every now and again.
To give your dishwasher a good clean, pour half a box of bicarbonate of soda on the bottom of the machine and run it empty on a rinse cycle. To deodorise regularly, place half a cup of bicarbonate of soda on the bottom of the machine again and do so in between loads.
Hope this weeks' tip proves handy! Happy cleaning! ;-) Continue reading ...
Cleaning your Bling!
For those who are lucky enough to possess some diamond jewellery, keeping them 'blingy' is a hard task at the best of times. Well it doesn't have to be anymore!
There are a couple of ways to do it but one way is easier than the other. You'll see what I mean as you read further! ;-)
The first method is simply to brush your diamond jewellery with some toothpaste on an old toothbrush. Then you can wipe off or rinse off the excess residue with a damp cloth or water.
The second method is only e... Continue reading ...
Taking Care of your Silver Jewellery, Naturally!
For a lot of us who wear silver jewellery, it can be a little annoying sometimes when you find your favourite piece, all tarnished and looking a little drab! Well, don't panic! It is very easily fixed and restored to its normal, shiny self!
All you have to do is line a bowl with aluminiun foil, fill it up with some cold water and 2 teaspoons of salt. Place your jewellery in the bowl with the mixture and wait for a few hours.
A molecular reaction called 'ion exchange' takes place and the end... Continue reading ...
Cleaning the Throne!
As human beings, we have some needs and one of these is usually relieved by visiting the loo. Since we spend so much time sitting on the throne (this applies more to guys than girls as girls tend not to take any reading material into toilet ;-) , we also need to make sure that our toilets are clean.
Something that a lot of people might find amusing is that you can use Alka-Seltzer tablets to clean a toilet vase! Funny but true! Just drop a couple of effervescent tablets down the hole and... Continue reading ...
Eco Tip of the Week #2
This week I will write about another use for vinegar...since it is such a versatile, natural substance.
A lot of people may not realise this but the beautiful smell of fabric softner on freshly laundered clothes is exactly what makes our clothes less absorbant and less breathable. Towels for example might be soft and smell yummy but they are not as effective as what they should be.
Vinegar can be used as a natural softner along with a few drops of essential oil such as lavendar or tea tree... Continue reading ...
Making a Difference
Sometimes it can be pretty difficult to make a difference to the world we live in and to the environment. All too often it's easier to take the 'easy' route and let others try. Well, if we all thought this way, we'd all be heading towards a very grim future.
Thankfully, it is not hard to start making a difference. All it takes is one little step at a time and slowly you'll see how you can make your mark on a brighter, healthier future.
In light of this, Eco Celebrations will be postin... Continue reading ...
