Washing the Dishwasher

October 26, 2010

Using a dishwasher has been shown to save litres of water as opposed to washing by hand. It is a wonderful invention but it does get a bit grimy every now and again.

To give your dishwasher a good clean, pour half a box of bicarbonate of soda on the bottom of the machine and run it empty on a rinse cycle. To deodorise regularly, place half a cup of bicarbonate of soda on the bottom of the machine again and do so in between loads.

Hope this weeks' tip proves handy! Happy cleaning! ;-)

Cleaning your Bling!

October 18, 2010

For those who are lucky enough to possess some diamond jewellery, keeping them 'blingy' is a hard task at the best of times. Well it doesn't have to be anymore!

There are a couple of ways to do it but one way is easier than the other. You'll see what I mean as you read further! ;-)

The first method is simply to brush your diamond jewellery with some toothpaste on an old toothbrush. Then you can wipe off or rinse off the excess residue with a damp cloth or water.

The second method is only easy if you have grandparents close by whose denture cleaning supplies you could raid! ;-)

Drop a denture cleaning tablet into a glass of water followed by your diamond jewellery. Remove jewellery and rinse after a few minutes and be dazzled!

Hope this week's tip has proved handy and see you next week for more eco tips!

Taking Care of your Silver Jewellery, Naturally!

October 12, 2010

For a lot of us who wear silver jewellery, it can be a little annoying sometimes when you find your favourite piece, all tarnished and looking a little drab! Well, don't panic! It is very easily fixed and restored to its normal, shiny self!

All you have to do is line a bowl with aluminiun foil, fill it up with some cold water and 2 teaspoons of salt. Place your jewellery in the bowl with the mixture and wait for a few hours.

A molecular reaction called 'ion exchange' takes place and the end result is your silverware is all cleaned up!

It's a simple yet effective way to clean your jewellery without the use of heavy chemicals. ;-)

Cleaning the Throne!

October 4, 2010

As human beings, we have some needs and one of these is usually relieved by visiting the loo. Since we spend so much time sitting on the throne (this applies more to guys than girls as girls tend not to take any reading material into toilet ;-) , we also need to make sure that our toilets are clean.

Something that a lot of people might find amusing is that you can use Alka-Seltzer tablets to clean a toilet vase! Funny but true! Just drop a couple of effervescent tablets down the hole and watch the bubbles at work. Wait until the bubbles have finished fizzing to scrub with a brush and clean as normal.

For mums out there, this treatment can also be applied to glass thermoses.

Hope this week's Eco Tip proves handy and remember, there are plenty of ways that we could each use to make a difference to the world we live in! ;-)

Eco Tip of the Week #2

September 27, 2010

This week I will write about another use for vinegar...since it is such a versatile, natural substance.

A lot of people may not realise this but the beautiful smell of fabric softner on freshly laundered clothes is exactly what makes our clothes less absorbant and less breathable. Towels for example might be soft and smell yummy but they are not as effective as what they should be.

Vinegar can be used as a natural softner along with a few drops of essential oil such as lavendar or tea tree oil.

Whilst it may not smell as good as man made fabric softner, it is a lot softer on the environment and a our conscience!;-)

Hope this week's tip will prove handy to you! ;-)

Making a Difference

September 20, 2010

Sometimes it can be pretty difficult to make a difference to the world we live in and to the environment. All too often it's easier to take the 'easy' route and let others try. Well, if we all thought this way, we'd all be heading towards a very grim future.

Thankfully, it is not hard to start making a difference. All it takes is one little step at a time and slowly you'll see how you can make your mark on a brighter, healthier future.

In light of this, Eco Celebrations will be posting a 'Eco Tip of the Week' on a weekly basis of course and will be sharing it around. If you feel you can apply it to your daily lifestyle, then great!! If you feel you can also share some tips, then I say go for it, the more the merrier! ;-)

So this week, our Eco Tip #1  is as follows:

Vinegar is your best friend when it comes to cleaning. Use it to clean windows, wipe benches or even clean bathrooms and toilets!

All the products we buy from supermarkets are always boasting about killing 99.9% of germs. This is probably why so many of our kids have so many allergies these days. Sometimes, it is ok to have some allergens in our environment...this is how we build our immunity.

Using more natural products is safer for our health and our environment.

If you can implement into your daily lives just one Eco Tip at a time, we can all work together to make a huge difference to 'Our World'!
